Pluralism Project Research on continuity and change in the religious traditions of new immigrant communities in south central Pennsylvania, in conjunction with Harvard University Pluralism Project and Dickinson College teaching/supervising student research, 2003 – present.

Pennsylvania Traditional Arts Survey, 1985-1986. Supervised a fieldwork team of six folklorists working in fifty three counties, to identify and document traditional artists and craftsworkers; conducted fieldwork in twelve counties. Survey work was followed by specific ethnographic case studies, which form the basis for development of the exhibition, "Craft and Community: Traditional Craftsmanship in Pennsylvania."

Yemeni Muslim Immigrants in New York City, 1980-1981: Ethnographic research focusing on multi-ethnic urban settings; the role of folklore in the creation and maintenance of ethnic and social boundaries.

Yemeni Jewish Immigrants in Israel, 1975-1976: Ethnography of dance in a Yemeni Jewish farming village; extensive interviewing and recording life histories; filming, recording, and notating music and dance events.
