Just for laughs, I collect old
containers
of Peterman's insecticides, manufactured by a distant relative
Wm.
Peterman, Inc., of New York (and later Newark, NJ) from 1890 to
about
1946 when the company was apparently bought out by
Bristol-Meyers. If
you come across this stuff, let
me know (just email me at dickinson.edu). I'm always interested
in
seeing what others find in the antique malls.

I'm Director of Sponsored
Projects and Research Compliance in the Corporate, Foundation
&
Goverment Support Office at Dickinson
College, the first
college chartered in the new nation in 1783. We are a
small
institution and don't have a formal Sponsored Research Office,
so the
procurement of government funds for faculty research and
institutional
projects are also
part of my brief. Its great fun. See our Capital

My academic background is
in
Near Eastern archaeology.
I lived in the Middle East (Jordan) off and on for about 9
years where
I honed my skills writing grant proposals - for my own
research and to
fund projects for the institute for which I was working.
Before that
I was a career graduate student, a warehouseman (frozen pies,
no
less!), a bicycle shop manager and mechanic.
I recently learned that I
am a
great-great-great-great-great grandson of Michael
Peterman
who arrived in the New World (from Germany via Rotterdam and
Cowes) on
Sept 29, 1750 (in Philadelphia) aboard the ship Osgood.

After
growing up all over the country, living in various places and
having
had many diverse adventures since, I'm still trying to decide
what (if
anything) it means that:
- I now live less than
45
minutes from the original Peterman farmstead just to the
southeast of
York, PA.
- I lived for about 15
years in the same town where my
great-great-great-great-great-grand-mother Hillegien Poppen
Zagers
settled after stepping off the boat (in
Holland, MI ) after her voyage from the Netherlands. She's
buried
in Graafschaap Cemetery on the corner of 32nd Street and
Graafschaap
Road, Holland, MI. I went past that cemetery thousands of
times, and
had no idea it was her final resting place.
