Home Fires, 1914-1915With the shattering of the great plans of 1914, the combatant
nations of Europe entered the uncharted territory of modern, industrial
warfare. Far from the collapse Angell predicted, all underwent social
and economic adjustments with such astonishing success that the conflict

to terms with these developments, and the relative success of their adaptations
to the Great War, as well as the great cost to political and economic
futures, is the topic of this segment.
