Week Seven

Victory in the East

By 1917, German and Austrian pressures, as well as requirements of modern total warfare clearly beyond the capabilities of  Tsarist Russia, had inflicted internal collapse on the Romanov Empire.
In March, 1918, the first peace treaty of the Great War was signed at Brest-Litovsk.  Russia was removed from the war, free to battle itself for a new world.  Tottering Austria was promised some relief, and Germany had its territorial gains in the East and its single front war at last.
