Welcome to the Cumberland Valley Rail-Trail (CVRT) Newville-Carlisle Extension site.
The first order of business is to extend a hearty “THANK YOU” to all the members of the Cumberland Valley Rail-Trail Council (CVRTC) board and all the CVRTC volunteers who made the Cumberland County Rail-Trail from Shippensburg to Newville a reality. It was thanks to the vision, persistence, and of course hard work of these dedicated volunteers over the course of many years that we now have a world-class trail right in our own back yards!
We are also in debt to the CVRTC for its willingness to accept ownership of the tract of land involved in the Newville-Carlisle extension (providing there are active Carlisle area members who agree to serve on their board and take responsibility for trail development and maintenance on the eastern leg of the trail). We hope that many of those who played a part in completing the Newville-Shippensburg section of the trail – board members and volunteers alike – will be willing and able to help in the process of extending the trail another 11 miles, from Newville to Carlisle. Their experience and advice will be invaluable as the process moves forward.
For all those who have not been involved already, now is a great time to sign up. The members of the CVRTC have set a wonderful example to follow, and now it’s time to follow their lead and get busy. Everyone interested in this exciting project is encouraged to email us with your names and ideas. No suggestion is too trivial, and no job is too small. Please email us today.
We have much work to do and all members of the community are welcome. So, as they used to say when the old Cumberland Valley Railroad ran daily trains through our beautiful valley. . . . "All Aboard!" |
