Reading Assignment

Discussion Questions

  1. What is network neutrality? Why is this issue so important now?

  3. Do content providers have a right to an unrestricted pipeline to customers, assuming their content is not harmful? Why or why not?

  4. How do companies like Google benefit by advocating network neutrality? How do broadband providers benefit by arguing against it?

  5. Does network neutrality benefit the free market, as Google argues, or does it hinder it, as broadband companies argue?

  6. Would the debate over network neutrality be different if users were allowed more choice over their broadband providers?

  7. Using any of the four workable moral frameworks described in Quinn Chapter 2, analyze the morality of charging content providers for privileged access to bandwidth.

  8. Using any of the four workable moral frameworks described in Quinn Chapter 2, analyze the morality of adopting a law requiring companies to provide unrestricted access to all non-harmful content providers.

  9. Discuss the potential consequences of adopting or not adopting network neutrality laws.
