GREEK 103 Introduction to Modern Greek. This course is an introduction to Modern Greek language and literature, designed for students with no previous knowledge of Modern Greek language, and placing special emphasis on the development of the students' ability to speak, understand, read and write Modern Greek. Furthermore, through a wide variety of themes and material, ranging from everyday situations, conversations, newspapers and magazines to Modern Greek songs, movies, theatrical performances, poetry and prose, the students will be also familiarized with every basic aspect of Modern Greek culture and civilization. GREEK 104 Elementary Modern Greek. This course is a continuation of the study of Modern Greek language and literature on an elementary level, and focuses on the development of the students' ability to speak, understand, read and write in Modern Greek; review of grammar and syntax, and expansion of vocabulary. Furthermore, through a wide variety of themes and material, ranging from everyday situations, conversations, newspapers and magazines to Modern Greek songs, movies, theatrical performances, poetry and prose, the students will be also familiarized with every basic aspect of Modern Greek culture and civilization. Prerequisite: Greek 103. Currently not offered.
GREEK 116 Intermediate Modern Greek. This course is a continuation of the study of Modern Greek language and literature at an intermediate to an advanced level, designed for students with a solid background of Modern Greek (GREEK 103, 104), and focusing on the development of the students' ability to fluently speak, understand, read and write Modern Greek. Furthermore, through a wide variety of themes and material, ranging from everyday situations, conversations, newspapers and magazines to Modern Greek songs, movies, theatrical performances, poetry and prose, the students will indulge in every basic aspect of Modern Greek culture. Prerequisite: Greek 104. Currently not offered.
MGRE 107 Intensive Modern Greek I. This is an accelerated, intensive, specialized and targeted course, aiming at preparing entering archaeology students for the summer field school at Mycenae, Greece. The goals are to prepare students to communicate in Modern Greek at a basic level while living and excavating at Mycenae and to enhance their experience with the local people and culture, both on- and off-site. The course teaches a basic oral command and understanding of Modern Greek, including a basic vocabulary of commonly used words and idiomatic expressions, as well as some specialized, professional or technical terms specific to archaeology. Special attention will be given to building the necessary language infrastructure with an emphasis on reading, listening comprehension, speaking, reading and some writing: alphabet, sounds, specialized and basic vocabulary and formulaic/idiomatic expressions, basic grammar and essential structure principles taught selectively in theory and mostly by intensive practice, through carefully selected texts, dialogues, and videotapes (adapted from Modern Greek textbooks and podcasts, professional archaeological books or novels, or made up from everyday-life situations). Additional on-site summer instruction will aim at further developing oral communication skills. No prerequisites; required for entering students to the D.E.P.A.S. of Mycenae field program; does not fulfill the College foreign language requirement. Offered every year.
MGRE 108 Intensive Modern Greek II. This is an accelerated, intensive, specialized and targeted course, aiming at maximally preparing archaeology students to function effectively as trench assistants at the excavation of Mycenae in Greece , as well as enabling them to interact and function comfortably in the local Greek culture. The former (recording, keeping journals, and directing workmen in Greek) requires multi-variant knowledge (reading, writing, and speaking) of highly specialized professional vocabulary and use of idiomatic expressions, while the latter entails a good oral command and understanding of Modern Greek. The course emphasizes advanced understanding, reading and speaking as well as some basic writing in Modern Greek through intensive practice on carefully selected texts, dialogues, and videotapes (adapted from Modern Greek textbooks and podcasts, professional archaeological books or novels, or made up from everyday-life situations), with special attention to further developing a specialized vocabulary necessary for archaeology professionals. Additional on-site summer instruction will aim at enhancing communication and research skills in Modern Greek. Prerequisite: MGRE 107; required for students returning to the D.E.P.A.S. of Mycenae field program; does not fulfill the College foreign language requirement. Offered every spring.
